Tire "sweating"

Posted by PavementPirate at March 06. 2007
Has anyone here ever experienced tire sweating? While I was cleaning/tweaking/inspecting yesterday I noticed the rear tire had uniform condensation covering everything but the wear patch. The front tire was perfectly normal... It has been about a month since I last rode it. I've stored many vehicles for an extended period of time and have never experienced this phenomena before. I am weary of taking it for my commute until I know what the heck is going on.

Any thoughts?

I asked the tire expert and here is what he said.

If it is a new tire it may be condensation attaching to the coating that is left on tires after the manufacturing process. If it is only hanging outside the scrubbed area I wouldn’t worry about it. Make sure you work the tires in easy… if you have never heard of it, even experienced riders have gone down on new tires due to the slick surface on new tires

The tires have nearly 4000 miles on them... I tried to clean them off the best I could before doing a brief ride. The wipe down revealed a translucent brownish liquid. I thought it may have been motor oil at first, but it significantly lighter like cutting/penetrating oil. Who knows.

Have you use a tire cleaner from an auto supply store? Those cleaners will melt some of the motorcycle tire compound. What tires do you have?

Honestly I don't remember. I believe they are Pirelli Diablos. The only cleaning products I have used are from Griot's Garage. I'll check them when I get home this afternoon.
