Big-Bore Kit and Lightened Crank

Posted by Dale Veith at December 04. 2006

Ok. I know that we're supposed to try to work on our bikes ourselves but these mods were WAY over my head so I'm having Moto Corsa do them for me. I'm having a 1078cc high-compression big-bore kit put in my Paul Smart. I stopped by on Saturday and found out that the pistons and cylinders are due in sometime this week. I got talking with Erich, the service manager, and he asked if there was anything else it needed while it was there. I'd been thinking about the crankshaft for awhile and, as the saying goes, one thing led to another and before I knew we'd agreed to splitting the cranks and doing the knife-edge, lightening, balancing thing to the crankshaft. Man, I can hardly wait to hear and ride this thing with a 1078 kit, lightened flywheel and lighten crank, it should rock!!!

Have any of you done similar mods? If so, how do you like them?

Haven't done this mod but know a few that have. Big bore kit isn't that hard but could be challenging. Who is doing your crank? Which flywheel? You could lose additional weight on the clutch side also (but only spins at half engine speed so not as noticable)

I know some dealers don't like to lighten the flywheel and crank because it can show bad tuning (stalls off idle) . You may have to get a PCIII to help with this.

MBP has a 1136 kit out there but it sounds like you already have a 1080 kit.

You might think about doing some head work since it is apart. I'd recommend MBP collets to extend you valve adjustments. But if you want to go wild get someone to port/polish the heads and make it really scream.

should be a great bike.

I have a DP lightened flywheel on it already. I love it. Moto Corsa is doing the work for me. They have a shop in Portland that has the latest in computerized machining and balancing equipment that is going to do the crank. They didn't have any problem with recommending that I go ahead with the flywheel and crank. In fact, AJ, one of the techs said, "Do it!. You won't regret it." They're not at all afraid that they won't be able to tune.

We discussed the PCIII and they want to see if we can get it to run properly without but we'll use one if we have to.

I've been thinking about the head work but I've got to let my wallet heal up some. I've dumped a lot of money into this bike this year and the only things left to do are getting pretty spendy. Maybe I can do the heads next winter..., along with magnesium side cases..., and a slipper clutch..., forged Marchesini's or some BSTs... Does it ever end?

I'd do wheels first before any other mod. BSTs really transform the bike.

Curious why the DP flywheel and not the Nichols? DP and crank work equal about the same savings as a Nichols.

Slipper clutch is also a good upgrade. Mg cases are nice but only save a 1 lb of static weight. Rotors are good to save weight.

headwork is $$$ but in the long run worth it IMO.

Dale, changing the primary, and rear sprocket to a mag/alloy and smaller chain is supposed to give 2-3 hp increase, lot of rotating mass, food for thought if your chasing horsepower................
